I really enjoy reading and watching other people’s morning routines. I find it so fascinating how people start their days. I’ve even written about my own morning routines, you can see them here. What I’ve found with my morning routines is they often change, sometimes it’s monthly depending on my health but most often it’s seasonal.

Recently I read a post in a Facebook group that asked what habits you do every morning and I realised that I have five habits I do every morning no matter how the rest of my morning goes.
I’ve never considered these five habits as part of my morning routine because I’ve been so influenced by how other people start their mornings and while people may talk about brushing their teeth and getting a shower that’s not the part of morning routines that most people are interested in especially with the popularity of Hal Elrod’s book Miracle Morning, in which Hal talks about starting your day using S.A.V.E.R.S. Silence, Affirmations, Visualisation, Exercise, Reading and Scribing. But these possibly boring, tedious and uninteresting habits are actually the foundations of your morning routine.

Your Foundations

While your morning routine is obviously important to setting up your day and in how the rest of your day will go, your foundations are the basis of how your morning routine will turn out. Which means of course that it has a knock on effect, a little like a domino tower.
Your foundations are the very little things that you do as soon as you wake up and your brain kicks into gear that in my opinion set you up for your morning routine. Here are my five before morning routine habits:

1. Cuddles

This is possibly the simplest but the nicest way I start my day and no it’s not an enthusiasm. When my husband’s alarm goes off we spend about ten minutes cuddling in bed before he gets up and starts his day. Sometimes we talk and sometimes we’ll cuddle and my husband will check his phone and go on Facebook and check his work emails, while I snuggle up to him and just drift until he has to get up.

2. Fluffy Socks

When I get out of bed I put on my fluffy socks as I suffer from cold feet all year round so I tend to nearly always wear some form of fluffy socks around the house. Sometimes with slippers and sometimes without. I really love Christmas Soap and Glory gift sets because you get a pair of pink fluffy socks in their set and they are the comfiest socks every and keep my feet snuggly and warm.

3. Let In The Morning

I really don’t feel like I can start my day without opening our bedroom curtains and letting the light and morning in. It’s also a bit of a game when I open our curtains to see what the weather is like. This has been truer recently when we’ve been hit by the beast from the east and the snow. Now the morning’s are getting brighter it’s even nicer to open our curtains as now the snow has cleared Spring is on its way.

4. Let The Beast Out

From the beast of the east to our own little tiny beast. Well, Evie isn’t actually all that tiny but she most definitely has her beastly moments. Evie is our nearly seven-year-old house bunny. During the night she sleeps in her cage but during the day she’s allowed to run around our home.

5. Make Our Bed

Is a newish habit I’ve been setting myself. I don’t make our bed look Pinterest worthy, it’s not my sort of thing. I just fluff the pillows and put the duvet back in place. It makes our bedroom look better and encourages me to keep our bedroom tidy. It also adds to that happy feeling at the end of the day when I climb back into a smoothly made bed with fluffed pillows.

What I’ve learnt from these before morning routines habits is that these five little things help set up my day in a positive and healthy way.

I find that if I skip slowly waking up and having cuddles with my husband and grab my phone instead my whole morning sinks quicker than a sinking ship and sadly I also lose my motivation.

Which can quickly tailspin and before I know it I’m feeling sad and doubtful and having lots of negative thoughts.

Which seems surprising just because I skipped five small and simple before morning routine habits.
